Just finished watching it. It had the occasional funny scenes, but it was overall a pretty bland episode. Though I probably thought that because the episode was obviously parodying a movie, but I have no idea which. Can anyone shed some light on this?

EDIT: I'm guessing it's Close Encounters of the Third Kind. In fact, I'm pretty sure now (thanks to the internet, ironically), and I've yet to see it.

Very, very, VERY boring episode..
I don't think there was a joke in this episode that made me laugh for more than a second. And it was way too predictable for SP.

I thought this episode would be praised! I think its one of the funnier episodes of South Park. Definitely a classic. I thought it was very funny. Randy is the best character. He can't do wrong.

The only bit it parodied was the bit where they trying to communicate with the internet with the music. Wikpedia claims it also parodies The Grapes of Wrath, War of the Worlds, Independance day, 30 days of night, on deadly ground and 2 girls 1 cup (never heard of the last to). They also say it was influenced by the great depression where people would go West to California as they heard there were jobs there.
I thought the episode was not that bad, I really liked the concept and I was glad to see Shelley beating up Stan again

The whole idea of driving to "California" and the scenes that follow (the black and white bit and the Government camp) are taken from The Grapes of Wrath book and movie. The gas station scene is a very direct parody of a seen where the Joads (who have lost their family farm in the wake of the great depression) talk with other families about how there is going to be "lots of jobs" in California and things will work out. Some random guy interjects that millions of people got the same idea (many from handbills that had been circulating advertising jobs ... which was really just a scam to get cheap workers) and that there could never be enough jobs for so many people ... then he tells how his own family eventually starved to death...

Anyway. First post! ... I thought the episode was hilarious -- very much in keeping with South Park's absurdist parody style, which is usually awesome and funny. I'm just old enough to remember sort of what life was like before the internet became 'popular'... how did anyone survive? laugh.gif

I was wondering. I noticed that kyle, and Shelly, both wanted to get on the internet before school started, but when it said 8 days without internet, and it was a Monday, wouldn't that leave the day the internet went out a weekend day- so there wouldn't be any school? Also the fact Shelly wouldn't be able to talk to her "online boyfriend" when no one has internet. I feel a bit more stupid after watching that episode :C

Kinda sad I noticed something so lame, but the episode was horrible, in my opinion.
